Jewels of Fall

Autumn, color, colors, fall, leaves, Nature, season

Last summer, thickly clustered emerald leaves,
deflected the scorching sun from my face, yet
they have thinned until only a few dangle freely
throughout the open weave of twigs and branches,
sparkling like earrings of ruby and gold
as the cooler autumn sun filters through.

Mingling like branches of different trees,
children reach across open spaces,
crossing paths, joining together,
totally oblivious to species or color.

Sunlight
Golden splendor
Arise and guide us through
day's color spectrum to Sunset's
orange glow.

Happy is the gleam in my eye
as I see small sprigs of green
popping through the snow; at least
I think it’s still called green.

You see, it used to be green grass
was simply Green or a slight variation of;
perhaps Yellow Green where the dog had been,
or Dark Green if I hit the fertilizer a little hard.

But now I’m so confused:
Is yellow green still appropriate,
or would Granny Smith Apple or
Inch Worm green be the right shade?

And dark green seems only known for
what veggies I should be eating. I guess I
need to pick between Pine Green, Forest Green,
and Rain Forest Green if I wish to describe the
richness of my over-fertilized lawn.

On second thought, maybe I’ll just enjoy
the current splendor of my Spring Green sprigs.

Red and Pink Do Go Together

Red is the color of my true love,
a positive aura in adversity. He
balances my pink personality
when mega cautious tries to rule.

His powerful stance and personality
helped his career quickly advance;
whereas my pink, more reticent self
leaned toward intuition more readily.

He’s self-assured and has overcome strife,
Cerebral Palsy and polio, to name just two;
But here is where my pinkness shines,
my nurturing soul yearns to take care of him.

You’d not likely find two more diverse souls.
However, like the colors that represent us,
blended together, we become a richer,
more beautiful version of each other.

Dabs and strokes of selective colors
immortalize landscapes as palettes of
oil paints brush up against canvas,
preservation of nature at its finest.

*Oil painting by George Henry Durrie (1820-1863), an American artist whose rural winter scenes became popular when reproduced as lithographic prints by Currier and Ives.

Mum may be for silence
when planning a big surprise, but
You’ll find it far outspoken
bursting forth within my yard.

Midnight Blue

midnight blue sky.jpg

I’ve seen the sky from sea level
and from 35,000 feet up;
But none can ever compare
to the sky that I witnessed tonight.

Surrounded by silence of night,
illumed by the month’s full moon,
I stared up in child-like wonder
at a single sheet of dark blue.

In crayons, it’s called midnight blue,
one of 19 shades they’ve devised,
an attempt to capture the essence
of nature’s most wonderful hue.

I love this dark shade of blue, but
I never could have imagined
that the color of childhood scribbles
could enlighten both me and the sky.

Patched in quilted splendor,
shades of green pine
needle through
golden strings of aspen
as they thread their way
up the mountain.
