Like a Morning Glory

Morning glory

Engage yourself with negativity,
and your heart will weigh heavy
with dissension in your life;

like the budding, wild rose
that struggles to survive among
the bindweed encircling it,

tendrils twisting ’round it until only
a spindle of its former self remains,
an unwelcome heaviness holding it.

Instead, live like the morning glory
who opens itself up each morning,
choosing its own path among the sunshine,

ringing vitality through the belled blossom
nestled among its heart-shaped leaves,
awakening positive spirits within us.

As darkness descends upon the earth,
join as it enfolds upon itself
in peace, its rapture restored
for another day.

Purple iris

Oh, tall, stalked beauty of purple plush,

like a Mexican señorita swirling and
dancing at her quinceañera,
celebrating her maturity,

your blossom sways with the breeze,
a skirt of petals flowing with beauty beneath
a blouson bodice of scented frills.

Please, do tell…
Is this your quinceañera?

from Power of a Raindrop, now available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and from the publisher, http://shop.ravenbooks.net.

Self-Starter

I gave her life,
fed and nurtured her,
and she blossomed before my eyes,
much like my healthy viola.

Encouraged by her surroundings,
she continued to grow and excel
beyond my expectations.

She’s a mature adult now
and has flourished on her own,
encouraging others to
reach out and start on their own.

Violas are beautiful plants known to self-seed (true self-starters), and with the right conditions, can bloom all year.

I felt his spirit as we worked in the garden
and felt his warmth as we worked the soil,
letting it sift through our fingers, treasuring it
as if pieces of gold.

I saw his smile as we deeply embedded roots
of small, budding flowers into the warm earth.
We were three generations, enjoying our roots,
just as he taught us, flowers and family alike.

Tulips, jonquils,
freshly sown peas
all lie quietly under the
white blanket tossed
down from the sky,
their spring welcome
frozen in time.

Being a Mother is like a blossoming flower;
it starts slowly, growing hour by hour.
Though budding love for the newborn
is threatened by an occasional thorn,
as the years go by and the petals unfold,
the love of mothering grows to measures untold.

Bringing Life to Spring

Peace and beauty come together as
perfectly shaped, deep purple petals
open to a beautiful inner core, a tulip
of exceptional quality and strength.

Spring ushers in with warmth
to welcome new life, like
my favorite royal flower,
sunny yellow daffodils,
baby animals,
and my beautiful daughter.

Happy 30th Birthday!

To Receive is To Give

His small hand
tightly clutches the present,
the one he picked himself.

So full of pride is he
as he hands me
a golden yellow cluster
of petite petals dangling
from its spindly stem.

“I picked a flower,
‘specially for you.”

Carefully, I take the
delicate gift and
find a mini vase
to showcase its beauty.

“Oh, thank you, honey.
I love it!”

I don’t have the heart to
tell him I’m allergic to
dandelions!

Reading Between the Strokes

Monet’s quick strokes of intense color
bring impressions of 3-D to his
two-dimensional oil paintings, even without
fiiltered glasses. It’s as if stems
catch a breeze…perhaps a wind,
a dog chase, or even a nibbling bunny.
Or as if water gently flows ’round corners
with reflected shadows dancing along.

Reading between the strokes,
I continue to be moved by Monet.

You’re my favorite perennial,
having come with the spring flowers,
fresh and welcoming.

But unlike the flowers,
you did not wither come winter.
We chose to bond together,
weathering the storms,
singing in the rain and
basking in the sunshine.

You’re the bright spot
in my garden of life.

Mum may be for silence
when planning a big surprise, but
You’ll find it far outspoken
bursting forth within my yard.
