The Eyes That Spoke

I looked into your eyes
and felt as if you knew me,
even though we’ve yet to meet.

Feeling rude, I quit staring,
but your eyes followed me,
causing me to look again.

Kindred spirits, by chance?
Or did you see my raw soul,
and know you could help?

I may never meet the eyes
from that photograph, but
I thank you for reaching me.

Not A Minute Before Its Time

The dining table, covered with
Mama’s fanciest tablecloth,
seats 15 related bodies today,
nervous they’ll not be comfortable,
yet all excited to be together.

They don’t notice the fine china
brought down from the highest cupboard,
the special silverware from the felted box,
nor the crystal water glasses that sparkle.

The platters and dishes pass quickly
as people fill their plates with mounds of
homemade mashed potatoes, dressing, and
thick slices of slow-roasted turkey.

But as the gravy boat is passed, the
clatter seems to stall as focus is shifted
to the slow stream of gravy as it
flows down over the spout
of the crackled and faded gravy boat;

And in that moment, all thoughts of
the immediacy of today’s lives–
cellphones, iPads, and streaming videos,
are replaced with flashbacks of

Grandma with her starched apron
covering her best Sunday dress,
leaning over the steaming pan, stirring
until the gravy mixture was perfect;

And I find myself,
like Grandma and her gravy,
unable to let this holiday pass
a minute before its time.

Cupid’s Arrow

Swinging on moonbeams
up among the stars,

A cupid watches over us
And stares in disbelief

It was his first assignment,
He’d studied long and hard:

“You must first see the glow
as they hold each other tight…
Yes, it’s there;

“Secondly, look for the signs
of admiration and respect…
Yes, they adore each other;

“Then, hold them up to the moonlight
So you can see their hearts

“Infuse your arrow with stardust,
then taking careful aim

“Pull the bow backward
and let the magic begin.”

It’s been decades since he “shot us”
but the magic hasn’t left;

The glow still surrounds us
With admiration and respect.

Challenge to write a poem about love without using the word love.

Smileys on phone screen

smiley faces, sad faces
even teary-eyed faces;

tiny red hearts,
beautiful bouquets;

iconic symbols
flashing past;

feelings reduced to
but a jpeg or two.

Such is love
in cyberspace.

*****

But emoticons
are not for us;

no symbols or
words are needed;

just you, me,
a glass of wine…..

As we close the Christmas season and greet
the new year, wishing all a Happy New Year.

image

Glowing lights on houses,
Brightly lit trees in windows,
Excited children fidgeting
As they await Santa’s return.

‘Tis the season for sharing
Warmth and good cheer,
May these peaceful times
Spread throughout the new year.

The Perfect Fit

Feet of a couple

What makes a shoe fit?

Is it the style that says it’s you, or
a comfortable pair, you can’t imagine being without?

Is it the way your foot glides when it’s on, or
is it that it caresses your feet as you walk?

Does it complete your ensemble, or
make you feel special when you slip it on?

Did you fall in love with it and not know why,
Because I know that’s how I felt, and

It’s how I feel about you and me…
A comfortable pair, caressing, loving;
you completing me in a most special way
as we glide through our lives together.

Ancient Ruins
You need not fear the
appearance of the world
crumbling around you,
if you live your life with
compassion. There will
always be a door open to you.
Stand tall among the ruins.

Lady in Waiting

The mail-order bride catalog
said my wait was nearly over;
my station in life could be found
just around the corner. Which,
of course, I took literally and believed.

I thought it meant I was
to wait for you by the train station,
the one near my house. But…..

I’ve stood, waiting endlessly, for you to come.
I won’t vacate my post; I don’t want to miss you.

I hold my head high, hat perched slightly askew, and
watch as my threads are scorched by the sun and
dehydration turns my bones inside out.
Should I give up on you?

Prideful, I know I can’t have been wrong;
You just took a wrong turn. You’ll be here soon.
With fortitude of steel, I straighten my back,
and wait some more.

Acrostic About Trust Challenge

A child holds your hand, and
before she knows it, she’s
caught up in the steps and
doesn’t realize you’ve let go, so
easily she goes forward on her own.

And before you know it, she’s on a
bicycle, swaying, weaving,
caught up in the forward motion,
determined to ride without training wheels,
evidently unaware when you let go.

And it seems only too quickly, she gives up
bicycling, her third or fourth by now,
caring only to get behind the wheel,
driving with you as her instructor,
each lesson a little easier than the last.

From day one, you were there with her,
growing closer day by day,
her trust of you so complete.
It only seems natural,
judging by her successes, that you
know you’ve been there for her, and that you
love and trust her enough to let her go.

2/17/15

This is an acrostic variation about trust. The first three stanzas begin in succession, a-e; the last stanza’s format is f-l. The assignment also suggested internal rhymes. I played some with full rhyme, slant rhyme, assonance, and alliteration. What a fun challenge.

language filled heart

In the gondola in Venice,
you flattered me so, “Sei bella.”

On the streets of Seville,
you charmed me, “Te adoro.”

Along the French Riviera,
you declared your love for me, “Je taime.”

But it wouldn’t matter if it were said in English or Chinese,
on the Hawaiian islands or in Timbuktu.

I see it in your eyes and in your caring ways,
and those, among many other blessings,
are why I say:

“I love you more than I did yesterday and less than I will tomorrow.”

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Translations:
Sei bella: You are beautiful
Te adoro: I adore you.
Je taime.: I love you.

sunset beach mother

I never envisioned
a sunset without oranges and reds and yellows.

I never thought blurry vision could be
anything but a view through streaming tears.

And I never dreamed I might not see your smile again
or see the love in your eyes as you look into mine.

However, as we oftentimes do,
I had taken something precious for granted.
I lost sight of things for just a little while,
though I’m sure it was a gift in disguise, for
I learned to cherish my eyesight, each and every day.

I fell in love to the vivid skies of sunset
as we walked along the shoreline,
yet it’s the moon that holds our love steadfast,

guiding, illuminating our path through darkness,
reflecting the sun’s radiant beams of happiness,
and glowing with romantic overtures of love.

Cleaning the Attic

Opening, assessing; sorting, resorting.
Each item bringing a fond memory
before eventually returned to its corner.
How many years will I continue this ritual,
shifting the same things back and forth?

But who’s to say what is a treasure?
The antique toys I open once a year to clean,
the knick-knacks and buttons my grandmother gave me;
bedspreads and matching decor I can’t seem to part with,
or luggage that’s seen better miles.

I had it all figured out, I thought. That was until…
I went to give something away and found
a tag tucked inside, a reminder of the thoughtful giver.
Neatly lettered, “To Mom & Dad, With Love, 1992.”
Now how can I possibly part with anything!

Healing Without Her

Grandma knew the cures
for scraped knees and upset tummies;
she even had advice for healing
broken hearts and troubled souls;
her kind ways minimized scarring
from the inevitable falls in life.

But I wish she’d shared the secret
of how I’d survive without her,
or how to get over missing her
when holidays and birthdays roll ’round.

Maybe only time can heal this wound.

We no longer rumba or cha-cha
like we did when we were young,

but I find just as much pleasure
hearing your footsteps each morning
as they shuffle across the wooden floor,

your cane keeping time
to your body’s rhythmic sway.

I love the season of autumn
where the colors softly change
from greens to autumn hues.

Blessed with warmer days,
refreshed by cooler nights,
these changes are inevitable,
and they’ll happen to me and you

as we softly enter our autumn,
the last season of our life,
may we see golden treasures
both old and new alike.

Some soar toward a target, their
red or black cape catching the wind
as they zoom in to battle.
Some defend with swords
and light sabers, dueling until
their enemy concedes defeat.

For others, it’s more subtle,
like an EMT attending to
a heart attack victim, or
the fabled Robin Hood,
equalizing the haves and have-nots.

But for me, it was when you
rescued me from myself and
offered me a part of your world.
That’s when I knew you were my
Superhero, someone I could
count on for the rest of my life.

Because you love me I have much achieved,
Had you despised me then I must have failed,
But since I knew you trusted and believed,
I could not disappoint you and so prevailed.

Paul Laurence Dunbar (June 27, 1872 – February 9, 1906) was an African- American poet, novelist, and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

You Would’ve Loved the Day

dad, family, father, Father's Day, grief, inspiration, life, love, poems, Poetry

A tribute to my father, who passed away last year.

The church still shone with Christmas,
and personal touches of you were there:
A handmade quilt that you made,
plants and flowers that you loved,
recognition of National Guard duty,
saddened faces of lives you had touched.

You had been called home, and after this day,
I’ll not be able to touch your face,
nor see the twinkle reflected in your eyes
when you smile. I’ll not be able to hear your
child-like excitement as we celebrate Christmas,
the season of your birth and your death.

Yet, I did not protest or fuss;
It was time that your suffering end,
and this day, well,
it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Fifty degrees, the day after Christmas,
plenty of sunshine and blue sky.
It’s as if it were provided for our benefit,
to lift our spirits as your eternal spirit lifted.

Happy Father’s Day!

I gave her life,
fed and nurtured her,
and she blossomed before my eyes,
much like my healthy viola.

Encouraged by her surroundings,
she continued to grow and excel
beyond my expectations.

She’s a mature adult now
and has flourished on her own,
encouraging others to
reach out and start on their own.

Violas are beautiful plants known to self-seed (true self-starters), and with the right conditions, can bloom all year.

Ah, Grandma’s Kitchen.
I remember the smells
as if it were yesterday–
coffee percolating on the stove,
fresh-baked pies lining the counter,
bread rising on the sideboard.
A mecca of goodness…
just waiting to be shared.
