Dancing to Different Beats

We looked deeply into each other’s eyes,
Your head held high and proud,
Mine slightly lowered and held fast as we
Passed in the grass.

I spoke briefly, noticing how you had grown
Through the summer,
And thankfully you didn’t hiss a reply
But smoothly glided on,
The perfect glissade to my Texas two-step
In the opposite direction.

I See White Stallions

I see white stallions
pulling puffs of clouds across
the powdery blue vastness,

a performance guided
by gentle winds
instrumentally in sync
with a relaxing summer day.

Universal Language

Bee-bop a diddly do
A ring a ding a dong;
Silly little syllables
create a happy song.

Bam, bang, crackle, crash
Ga-rump-a-rump-a-roo;
Now these rougher syllables
I’d rather not even use.

But they all serve a purpose,
and get the point across;
Though they’ve little meaning
they express emotions well.

And so it is with music,
Universal across all lands;
Understood by every tongue,
yet with nary a word sung,
its volume and intonations
convey the feeling among.

Ivory Keys

I blinked through tearful eyes
to see if the yellowed ivory keys
of the old family piano
were really moving.

In my mind’s eye, I saw them
dancing a Sentimental Journey of
Saturday nights growing up;

a special time when we children
forgot animosity and joined together
in harmony, creating memories
more precious than Ivory Palaces.

Standing for Jazz

Standing for hours in damp, chilly weather
in a long line in a dark alley was not
something I would have ever imagined doing.
Yet here I was, in New Orleans, doing just that.

The guard controlled the crowd, allowing only
a few in at a time. To Preservation Hall, that is.
Where the roots of jazz meet the modern world.

The cozy old building proved larger than life
when the music started. Smoke stung my eyes
as the short drink burned my throat, but I wouldn’t leave.
I swayed to the improvisation of commingled sounds,
brass and bass instruments juxtaposed in syncopated rhythm.
Edgy yet amazingly melodic, blended voices
of saxophones and a baritone sang along.

Closing my eyes, I imaged what it would have been like
to hear the greats, like Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington, on stage.

Skilled hands
of musicians
lull babies to sleep by
gently strumming harmonious
rhythms.

guitar
Cinquan is one of my favorite forms of poetry.

And the Beat Goes On

An unknown tune
beats within the
Fibro body. Conductors

Set the Beat

as cymbals crash
repeatedly against an
exploding headache.

And The Beat Goes On

with timpani mallets
pounding fervently at
already sore muscles.

And The Beat Goes On

with drumrolls drilling
faster and faster…
till exhaustion hits.

And The Beat Goes On,

each day, a new rendition
of an old song, unique yet
recognizable just the same.

We live each day to the
tune we’re given, changing
the measures we can,
pausing for those we can’t,
and dancing with those we can…

And the Beat Goes On!
