There was a time when
it seemed we didn’t age.
It was as if the clock was
constantly rewinding, or
perhaps time stood still.
A new hairdo; fresh makeup;
Megavitamins and the gym;
Stylish clothes on trim bodies–
All served to keep a body young.
But it’s the digital age, and
the numbers shout LED red
and click as the minutes pass,
a constant reminder that
time waits for no one.
I wish we could go back to yesteryear,
where people rose with the sun
without need of a musical alarm;
where day played out naturally
and shuttered to the descending curtain
of the setting sun. Then I could
swing like the pendulum
of the grandfather clock
that graced my grandmother’s mantle,
swaying ever so gently back and forth,
never pausing for sickness or glum;
never worrying about stray gray hairs;
never having to worry about
atomic clocks or losing track of time;
Just being content with the ebb and flow
of the life I’ve been given;
at peace with how I’ve kept time.

inAs we close the Christmas season and greet
the new year, wishing all a Happy New Year.
Glowing lights on houses,
Brightly lit trees in windows,
Excited children fidgeting
As they await Santa’s return.
‘Tis the season for sharing
Warmth and good cheer,
May these peaceful times
Spread throughout the new year.

inI look out at the dark,
Yet the sun’s still shining
on the other side of the world,
so I pretend I live in China
and put on a sunny smile
for I’m glad to be awake
to the wonders of the season,
when people forget animosity
and celebrate togetherness.

inScorching beneath the bright sunlight of day,
opaque olive branches seem to vanish,
replaced by dark, elongated stick-like limbs
projecting ever forward, reaching out,
seeking enlightening paths of their own.
Stripped of three-dimensional prejudices,
these two-dimensional silhouettes
criss-cross traditional barriers,
offering friendship and peace along their way.
Occasionally, progress seems to rescind as
clouds drape across the sun,
causing an unsettling interlude;
but hope is afloat as another act begins,
alit with shadowy figures of peace.

Distressed beyond repair,
his body broken down,
years of daily living
finally take their toll.
Assistive, caring hands,
help bring a calm resolve,
labored, shallow breaths
replaced by even sounds.
As we sit here by his side,
listening to him sleep, his
quiescent repose grants
peace to grieving hearts.

I should have known
it would catch up to me,
all the things I did
without a pause,
enjoying movement
without any pain,
smiling and humming
as I did the chores,
then enjoying some time
in the great outdoors.
It was so good to
feel normal again,
to wake with the birds,
ready for day’s begin.
But,
I should have known…
Fibromyalgia
never leaves;
it hibernates, as
in a deep freeze,
then awakens
like an angry bear,
disturbed by forces
outside its lair.
So for today, I’ll
declare a truce,
embrace the peace
without excuse.
Maybe next time….
Well, probably not.
Just suffice it to say,
we’re friends,
of a special kind,
to the very end.
