The Eyes That Spoke

I looked into your eyes
and felt as if you knew me,
even though we’ve yet to meet.

Feeling rude, I quit staring,
but your eyes followed me,
causing me to look again.

Kindred spirits, by chance?
Or did you see my raw soul,
and know you could help?

I may never meet the eyes
from that photograph, but
I thank you for reaching me.

Ancient Ruins
You need not fear the
appearance of the world
crumbling around you,
if you live your life with
compassion. There will
always be a door open to you.
Stand tall among the ruins.

I love the season of autumn
where the colors softly change
from greens to autumn hues.

Blessed with warmer days,
refreshed by cooler nights,
these changes are inevitable,
and they’ll happen to me and you

as we softly enter our autumn,
the last season of our life,
may we see golden treasures
both old and new alike.

Recharging the Brain

I took my brain for a test drive–
Revved her up to check her speed,
tested her powerful engine,
then slamming the brakes to a stop,
I shifted into neutral so I could
idle, become steadfast at the helm.

The motor speedway wasn’t far;
It followed the path, memory lane.
Drivewise, she met expectations;
Neutral was fueled by love and
where I recharged by reading.
Driving forward, I feel centered,
enjoying the next journey in my life.

Oxpecker on rhinoceros

Beautiful little oxpecker
atop the rhinoceros;

why doesn’t Rhino protest
as you perch upon his back?

Do you tickle his fancy as
you clean bugs from off his skin;

Or are free meals and transportation,
reward for screeching warnings
about dangers far and near?

No matter the rhyme or reason
for your symbiotic life,

You bear homage to the adage,
“There are no free rides anywhere.”

Saved the Best for Last

The most athletic were always
chosen as team captains,
so naturally, physical education
teachers never picked me.

I had high hopes, though,
that the captain would pick me first.
I held my head high with pride,
focusing until she caught my eye.
I just knew if she saw my enthusiasm,
she’d for sure pick me right away.

Had we connected? She’d looked
right at me (or so I thought).
Then she called on her best friend
to be by her side.

That’s okay. BFF’s should
be on the same team.

Now, though. Now she’ll pick me.
And she looked right at me…
and called someone else.

Okay. I get it.
She just didn’t want it to look like
she was playing favorites by picking me next.

Third? Fourth? My hopes faded and
I began to slump. Head downcast,
feet nervously shuffling the dry dirt,
I waited what seemed like forever
before I heard my name.

As I sauntered to our bench,
I heard the team captain call out
one more name. Could it possibly be!

I looked up to discover that, indeed,
My BFF and I would be sharing the bench.

It doesn’t matter if you’re first, middle or last chosen;
every position has an upside.

BFF: youngish slang for Best Friends Forever

I am simply what I am, or I begin to be that. I live in the present. I only remember the past—and anticipate the future.

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), U.S. philosopher, author, naturalist. Letter, March 27, 1848, to Harrison Blake, in The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, vol. 6, p. 163, Houghton Mifflin (1906).

Meditation focusing on the present moment and Buddhist studies emphasizing living in the present are nice reminders of ancient philosophy. Today’s Thoughtful Thursday is another simple yet beautiful way to say it.

“Many paths lead from the foot of the mountain, but at the peak we all gaze at the single bright moon.”

Ikkyū (一休宗純 Ikkyū Sōjun?, 1394–1481) (self-named: “Crazy Cloud”) was an eccentric, iconoclastic Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and poet. He had a great impact on the infusion of Japanese art and literature with Zen attitudes and ideals. Wikipedia via Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan, entry “Ikkyū” by James H. Sanford

My Theory of Positivity

Damaged treasures,
Broken hearts,
Injured pride.

Images
indelibly stored in brains,

negativities
heavily weighted by physiology,
tipping the scale, if allowed.

Even mathematically,
a negative will take
a positive down.

So stack the odds with
purposeful remembrance
of good times,
of positive feelings, and
of loving family and friends.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.”

Often credited to Dr. Seuss, originally attributed to Georges Duhamel in THE HEART’S DOMAIN (1919). Originally composed in French, the wording in English varies slightly in translations. This is such a beautiful translation.

“We do not know the true value of our moments until they have undergone the test of memory. Like the images the photographer plunges into a golden bath, our sentiments take on color; and only then, after that recoil and that transfiguration, do we understand their real meaning and enjoy them in all their tranquil splendor.“

Actions driven by attitudes
are like boomerangs…
whatever you throw out
will be returned to you.

Judge or act in anger, and
people will treat you with
hostility or disdain.

Reach out with respect
and kindness and
good will come your way.

Let my flame forever burn

Let me light the way for the
tired and wearied, dispelling
their darkness, bringing tranquility
and peace to comfort their souls.

My Personal Script

Chronic pain is written for me;
morning stiffness, evening pangs,
uncooperative muscles.

The storyline is scripted by
doctors and researchers.

How the story plays out, however,
is my privilege as the lead actor
to put my personal spin on the lines.

I rise like the sun, slowly from
the horizon yet bright and welcoming.
Staging my day with work and fun, I
bask in sunshine and warmth.
And like the sun, I succumb to
darkness and fade into the horizon,
re-energizing for another day.

The ancient tree
stands erect,
rooted at the ground;
dry, withered arms
in Upward Salute;
a delicate balance
in space and time:
Mother Earth, Father Sky;
Past, Present;
Life, Death.

Beauty grows by depth,
pillars of strength layering
step by gradual step.

An essence of spirit
beautifies the surface,
visible to all who seek.

Truly monumental work.

20131211-100113.jpg

There were three of us,
raised in the right ways…
“See no evil,
Hear no evil, and
Speak no evil.”

But we had no possible idea,
that we needed one more say,
until I met my husband with
his gentle Buddhist ways.

We neither see, hear, nor speak
of evil in our lives,
but by adding “Do no evil,”
our mantra’s now complete.
