Leaving Us

We met in the Spring
when you first unfurled with life,
But we’re drifting apart,
and it breaks my loving heart.

Bursting forth with song,
I wave as I stroll by;
Your yellowed hands wave back,
and I realize you’re not strong.

Your neighbor’s orange glow can’t
disguise what’s set to come,
For I know that fall’s approaching
and your earthly time’s ‘most done.

I’ll not forget the pleasures
you brought into my life,
Like cooling summer breezes
and filtering days’ harsh light.

In spite of Autumn’s changes,
I’ll continue to live and thrive;
Learning to cope with sadness
is a key to life’s delights.

poem Tears of Living on photo

May the tears of sorrow
flow long enough
to overcome sadness,
leaving our hearts open
to smile through
tears of happiness.

I thought I knew compassion,
but when I looked into his eyes,
I knew I’d never felt that way.

The tenderness he offered a lost dog,
the inner need he had to help,
to makes things better for her
brought warmth to my heart.

Then I watched his seven-year-old eyes swell with tears
as they walked the streets and found her owner.
The dog of his dreams was gone,
returned to her scared and punitive owner,
and his heart was breaking.

As I watched this young boy walk away,
head hanging, brown eyes saddened by the struggle,
I knew he was learning doing the right thing
can feel wrong sometimes,
but I could also see that he can’t help but be who he is,
and that he’d do it again.

Softly spoken,
words of sympathy
innocently invite sadness…

I’m sorry for your loss.
Our deepest sympathies.

Could there be a better way,
without tearing hearts apart?

Nature’s tranquility
reflects a soothing softness
into once saddened eyes,
brings calming release from
shadows surrounding her,
and provides peace to
her anguished soul.
