Pondering Hibernation

Sleeping bear graphic

I prepared for winter as if a bear,
eating enough to store a little fat,
prepping my den with soft bedding
and surrounding myself with my
favorite things before thinking about
curling up like a ball of furry fluff.

Then the cold came, and I hunkered in
my corner, ready for hibernation to begin.
Well, eight hours later, I woke to the
pressing needs of primal functions,
cramps in muscles I didn’t know I had,
and hunger growling through my tummy.

How do they do it? The bears,
the reptiles; the bees and the bats?
How do they slow their muscles down,
close their minds to their surroundings
and let sleep overtake their bodies?

Do they eat until they get drowsy,
simply too tired to move?
Do their bodies naturally adapt
to the changing environment?
Or do they meditate into quietude,
re-awakened with the spring?

Just wondering…

Purple iris

Oh, tall, stalked beauty of purple plush,

like a Mexican señorita swirling and
dancing at her quinceañera,
celebrating her maturity,

your blossom sways with the breeze,
a skirt of petals flowing with beauty beneath
a blouson bodice of scented frills.

Please, do tell…
Is this your quinceañera?

Tulips, jonquils,
freshly sown peas
all lie quietly under the
white blanket tossed
down from the sky,
their spring welcome
frozen in time.

My Spring Fling

As winter’s briskness departs,
I lower the furnace setting, then
Open shuttered windows letting
Bright sunshine warm the rooms;

I set back my winter woolens,
Throw back the heavy covers,
Replace all with lighter fabrics
For spring has finally sprung.

Modern Day Spring Cleaning

Hours I used to spend cleaning
bed springs,
closets, attics and such,

I now spend updating, syncing,
adding, deleting…
all with but a single touch,

Whereas I used to battle heavy lifting,
now I merely sit,
I don’t move my body much,

just a finger tapping, instructing
the electronic gadget
to change or scrub the stuff.

Not able to “go out” to eat,
young bodies with big voices,
impatiently squeak their order,
chittering, chattering to be
heard above their siblings,
beaks open, necks outstretched,
ready for the worm as Mama
prepares the “delivery”.

Happy is the gleam in my eye
as I see small sprigs of green
popping through the snow; at least
I think it’s still called green.

You see, it used to be green grass
was simply Green or a slight variation of;
perhaps Yellow Green where the dog had been,
or Dark Green if I hit the fertilizer a little hard.

But now I’m so confused:
Is yellow green still appropriate,
or would Granny Smith Apple or
Inch Worm green be the right shade?

And dark green seems only known for
what veggies I should be eating. I guess I
need to pick between Pine Green, Forest Green,
and Rain Forest Green if I wish to describe the
richness of my over-fertilized lawn.

On second thought, maybe I’ll just enjoy
the current splendor of my Spring Green sprigs.
