Pondering Hibernation

Sleeping bear graphic

I prepared for winter as if a bear,
eating enough to store a little fat,
prepping my den with soft bedding
and surrounding myself with my
favorite things before thinking about
curling up like a ball of furry fluff.

Then the cold came, and I hunkered in
my corner, ready for hibernation to begin.
Well, eight hours later, I woke to the
pressing needs of primal functions,
cramps in muscles I didn’t know I had,
and hunger growling through my tummy.

How do they do it? The bears,
the reptiles; the bees and the bats?
How do they slow their muscles down,
close their minds to their surroundings
and let sleep overtake their bodies?

Do they eat until they get drowsy,
simply too tired to move?
Do their bodies naturally adapt
to the changing environment?
Or do they meditate into quietude,
re-awakened with the spring?

Just wondering…

Warmed by Winter

Fireplace

I closed my eyes
to summon summer back,
when the sun warmed my bare skin
and the landscape lushed green,

But I shuddered as the
warmth of the crackling fireplace,
encircled my chilled body,
bringing loving memories of

family, hot cocoa in hand,
laughing as we looked out at
the lopsided snowman we
made only a few moments ago.

I take a deep breath in,
absorbing today’s wintry scene
of contrasted white snow and
the ever darkening sky,

knowing I don’t want to miss
living in the present moment,
where the cold reflects warmth
and time to slow down and enjoy it.

Baring Winter’s Arrival

I bare sandals as I step out,
half expecting the lawn to respond
like it did yesterday, when
the sun encouraged its green
tendrils to grow plush and wiggly,
tickling my fleshy exposed toes.

But time can change quickly,
and my exposed toes scrunch under,
seeking shelter from winter’s chill
and the inevitable crunch of grass as it
splays frozen and flat beneath the sandal.
Together, we bear the weight of the season.

Fall’s a Mystery

Fall’s a Mystery
(Or I’ve Been Watching
Too Much Crime TV)

Weathervane night
Blustery winds bring seasonal mysteries, like
why once supple flowers turn crispy and still,
why leaves lose color and fall dead away,
why summer’s loud bugs turn eerily quiet,
and why some people fade when the sun disappears.

If I were a detective, I’d capture the flowers
and confine them indoors for, say, 90 days,
after which, if warm, they’d be returned outdoors.

I’d turn the leaves over to the homicide folks
and hope an autopsy could reveal why
once green and pliant, they’re now crunchy and brown;

I’d send my partner on a seasonal stakeout
along with a sensitized listening device
to determine if crickets have Winter sounds;

And for the people, if they’d consider a change,
I’d see them moved to a sunnier place,
and as their sponsor, of course I’d move, too.

Happy Fall!

Sunday Afternoon Assonance

I lie, a luxuriatingly lazy,
lifeless form, in
front of the fireplace,

reading, resting,
rejuvenating,

letting the fire’s energy
refresh my energy’s flow,

fortifying me for
a fractious few days
of rigorous work.

Such fun with assonance, consonance and alliteration!

Children’s footprints,
softened by late winter sun,
form pock marks in the
dough-colored yards of snow.

Half-eaten fruit dropped
by passing birds leave
a seedy topping for
nature’s focaccia bread.

Flames flicker an invitation
to hooded bundles of fur
entering the front door.

Shedding their coats and boots,
stockinged children race to
the welcoming fireplace.

Eyes sparkle as giggles break
into the slightly embellished
tale of their snowman, just
sure he’ll come to life someday.

Winter’s nip seeps through my pores,
creeping through vessels and nerves
till it finds my thinning bones,
circling ’round, sealing in the cold.

Shivering, I curl into the recliner,
snuggling with layers of quilted comfort.
Glowing cheeks, reflections of a well-lit fire,
flush brighter with my first sip of tea.

Revived, nerves and muscles jerk to
attention, stimulating blood flow,
warming these precious wands of marrow–
no longer chilled to the bone.

Ladies and gentlemen,
crank up the power
and start your heaters.

With Arctic freeze covering
the nation, highs of 32 degrees
remain merely a dream to many.

0 to 30 and back again….
Perhaps for mopeds or bicyclists,
But not for my freezing toes!

Let the heat wave begin!

Like hundreds of bouncing balls,
snow pellets hit the window,
knocking, pounding, pouncing.

Ricocheting right and left,
they rebound then dribble
down, deflated of sound.

like partially drawn blinds,
distortIng old trees into
shadowy sticks and puffs,
disguising houses as
dark, boxy illusions,
clouding visionary memories
of unobstructed views.

Buried beneath tools
in a cluttered garage,
lies a childhood sled,
hidden from view.

Twenty-five years since
it was actively used,
our lively five-year-old
set on having fun.

Today the same sled
saw the light of day,
as I tugged and drug
it from beyond its lair.

Our five-year-old grandson,
set on having fun, sledded
the snowed hill our
daughter had done.

Hard to imagine
in a techno world,
an old-fashioned toy
would be more fun!

in the spring,
allowed me to listen to chirping baby birds;

in the summer,
surrounded me in bursts of happy colors;

in the fall,
enriched me with golden splendor.

Yet, in the winter,
I choose not to sit in its beauty
but to enjoy it from afar.

The cold, white fluff, gently laid
while I sleep, is a scene
I don’t have the heart to disturb.

It’s purity soon enough is breached
as it transforms beneath the sun,
but I’ll enjoy the untouched wonder
for as long as I possibly can.

Today was light and breezy,
with some gusts, but not a storm.
A light sweater was all I had,
and it kept my body warm.

Just yesterday was sunny,
shirt-sleeve weather, they’d say,
But tomorrow will be stormy,
with cold and blustery rain.

There seems to be no rhythm
to what the sky will bring.
‘Tis the changing of the seasons,
the cusp of Wintering.

Batting for Winter

They are predicting snow for next week. Brrrr!

Batting for Winter

Batten the hatches.
Bed down the plants.
Weather’s changing,
No time to waste.

Winds from the north,
A definite sign.
Snow’s on it’s way,
I can feel the chill.

Find warmer clothes.
Turn on the furnace.
We’re in for a change;
One I just can’t embrace.

I don’t like cold weather
Nor shoveling of snow,
It seeps in my bones
and freezes my toes.

It’s not of my choosing,
but come if it must;
I’ll gladly partake of
the slow winter’s pace.
